Top 5 Most Endangered Species in the World

There are a variety of factors which cause the depopulation of animal species. Poaching , habitat destruction , climate change and invasive species all play an important role in disrupting the population. Many nations have laws offering protection to conservation reliant species like for example, forbidding hunting, restricting land development or creating preserves. Earth is currently in the middle of a massive crisis in which we are in immediate danger of loosing hundreds of species of animals. There are some organizations like World Wildlife Fund, which are working to save these endangered species. WWF compiled a list of most endangered species which are facing extinction. So here is a list of Top 5 Most Endangered species that need urgent attention to be saved.

5) LEATHERBACK TURTLE

The Leatherback sea turtle ( Dermochelys coriacea ) sometimes called lute turtle is the largest of all sea turtles and the fourth largest modern reptiles. This specie has survived for more than a hundred million years but is now facing extinction. Only 2300 female leatherback turtles are now thought to remain in the Pacific Ocean.A large number of Atlantic leatherback turtles are caught each year as bycatch or killed accidentally by fishing fleets. Moreover, rising sea level and Global Warming also having a dramatic impact on leatherback populations and their offspring.  Its actually due to nest warming trend which effects the sex of the turtle offspring and is reducing the number of male turtles.

4) MAGELLANIC PENGUIN

The Magellanic Penguin ( Spheniscus magellanicus ), is a south American penguin. It is the most numerous of the Spheniscus penguins. Millions of these penguins still live on the coast of Argentina and Chile, but the species is classified as the "threatened species" primarily due to vulnerability of large breeding colonies to help the fight against the oil spills, zoo representatives from all over the world come and adopt the hatchlings and breed them here. Once threatened by oil spills , Magellanic penguins now face a large threat as the fishes are being displaced by warming ocean currents and the penguins have to swim about extra 25 miles (40 km ) to find food. About 20,00-22,000 of Magellanic penguins die each year as a direct result of oil contaminated water. At present 12 of 17 penguin species are experiencing rapid population declines.

3) PACIFIC WALRUS

Pacific Walrus ( Odobenus rosmarus ) is a large flippered marine mammal. The walrus is the only living specie in the Odobenidae family and Odobenus genus. They live mostly in the shallow waters above the Continental shelves, spending significant amount of their lives on sea ice looking forbenthic bivalve molluskus to eat. They rely on the sea ice for protection from predators whilst they give birth and nurse their calves. With the melting of floating ice, the Pacific walrus are increasingly becoming vulnerable to predators like orca and polar bears.Due to this reason this specie is included in list of Top 5 most endangered species and is kept at 3rd spot.

4) POLAR BEAR

The Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ) is a bear native largely within the Arctic Circle. It is the Worls's largest carnivore ans also the largest bear. The Polar Bear is classified as vulnerable specie with eight of the nineteen Polar Bear sub-populations in decline. Many leading Polar Bear biologist  have expressed grave concerns about the impact of climate change. The key danger posed by the climate change is malnutrition or starvation due to habitat loss. Polar bear hunt seals from a platform of sea ice. Rising temperatures cause the sea ice to melt earlier in the year, driving the bears to shore before they have built sufficient fat reserves to survive the period of scarce food in the late summer of the early fall. So keeping in view all these threats Polar Bear is placed at number 2 in the list.

1) TIGER

The Tiger ( Panthera tgris ) is the largest cat species reaching a total body length up to 3.3 meters. They are the third largest land carnivores. Tigers once ranged widely across Asia, from Turkey  in the West to the Eastern coast of Russia. But over past 100 years they have lost 93% of their historic range. According to a rough estimate only 3200 Tigers are left in the wild. Major reasons of decline in  Tiger's population are habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation and poaching. They are poached for their body parts which are used in traditional Asian medicine. Moreover Tigers are also hunted as to show off the bravery. So the Tigers are receiving threats from everywhere and is at the top of the list of Most Endangered Species,
